SOCIAL NETWORK GRASSROOTS EFFORT UNDERWAY: CONVINCE THE MET, DONORS TO TAKE RECORD EXHIBITION ON THE ROAD

Petition Gaining Momentum For “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” Exhibit To Go On Tour

In an effort to convince the Met and both regular donors as well as donors who loaned clothes for the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty Exhibit to reconsider ending the show and to take it on tour to other major cities in the world, Selena Norris, independent designer created a petition on Change.org for mass circulation.

With only a few hundred signatures so far, the petition is making headway in getting to the public. So far it has been circulated on many industry-related sites on LinkedIn, is on Facebook, and has been shared with the top 99 fashion and style blogs in order to gain momentum. Well-known fashion bloggers such as Bryan Boy and Jennine Jacob of “The Coveted” have already tweeted to their audience in a sign of support.

“His untimely death touched the hearts of many who look up to him as one of the greatest designers, in our time and throughout history, says Ms. Norris.”The goal of this petition is to help spread the beauty of his work with the world as a final testament and legacy of his genius, to bring him honor as we remember the beauty he brought into the world.”

The Met announced on Sunday that Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty had admitted its 658,000th visitor, making it the eighth most-visited exhibition in Met history in terms of total numbers, behind last year's Picasso in The Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition (703,256 in 2010) and 1978-79 Treasures of Tutankhamun.(1.36 million in 1978-79).

The exhibit is not scheduled to go on tour as, according to sources within the Met, the bulk of the garments are on loan and is to be returned after the exhibit closes. While a plea was sent in response requesting the Met and curators to ask the donors to consider allowing their objects on loan to continue the exhibition to tour other cities, no word has been issued yet whether this was undertaken or if their position has changed.

The petition is hoping to provide impetus to reverse the decision of those at the Met and the donors to allow the exhibition to tour.  With many claiming McQueen a genius on par with Picasso and for his mastery, technique and revolutionary creativity to be as influential as Dior, the hope is that this show and the amazement it has manifested can be shared with a broader audience that would not otherwise have the opportunity to see what many have billed as an amazing event showcasing one of our icons of modern history.
